Our roots

What we’re all about & where we’re going with you

vision & mission

The Ugandan Water Project exists to see Uganda as a nation liberated from the bondage of water-borne disease and poverty as communities leverage the transformative power of clean water to empower all people to live the lives they were created for.

We help you end Uganda’s water crisis once and for all by building infrastructure that relieves immediate water insecurity today, developing sustainable enterprises that keep clean water flowing tomorrow, then advocating for national systems that ensure it stays that way forever.

OUR VALUES

BACK TO THE BEGINNING

Sometimes crashing a neighbor’s barbecue can lead to a lifelong mission.
The Ugandan Water Project grew out of a chance encounter at a 2008 summer barbecue in western New York when James Harrington met a visiting Ugandan pastor, George. As the two men chatted, James was deeply moved by the stories the pastor shared about the daily challenges people faced back home, all because they lacked access to one of life’s most basic necessities: clean drinking water.

United by their desire to see communities experience freedom from water poverty, James and George began to envision how they could advocate for clean water. Before long, James and his friend Derek Levendusky raised funds for their first rainwater collection system through the worship ministry they both belonged to at the time, Isaiah Six Ministries. This side project quickly grew beyond anyone’s expectations, and in 2009, James left his job to pursue this new mission full-time as a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit organization.

Today, UWP has become an innovative WASH (water, sanitation, and hygiene) organization that has provided clean drinking water to hundreds of thousands of people across Uganda and continues to lead the way in setting industry standards for water solution excellence.
