Over this past year in college, I joined a mission on my campus called Project Okello that raises money to support clean water in Uganda through the Ugandan Water Project. Over the past two semesters, we raised over $9,000 to repair 2 broken borehole wells and send a member of Project Okello to Uganda through different events that were held on campus! Because of our connection to Uganda and the water projects we sponsor through UWP, our group has the opportunity to see the work we made possible as well as participating and learning alongside UWP in Uganda. This year, I was honored to be chosen to go to Uganda this summer along with another member of Project Okello.
The Ugandan Water Project is a humanitarian non-profit organization that provides clean water solutions to those in need in Uganda. These include rainwater collection systems on large school or community buildings, repairing borehole wells and training local leadership, and distributing filters for classrooms and households. Many Ugandans currently drink from traditional wells – runoff pits that are shared with animals, often contaminated, and can run dry depending on the season.
As part of UWP Team #25, we will be visiting communities and schools to interact with the people and gather their stories. We will hear about the impact that water has on their lives and how clean ater brings change. These stories are vital to the work of UWP. We will also get the chance to work with the UWP crew to install a rainwater collection system, participate in the monitoring and evaluation of water projects, and experience the rich culture of Uganda.
Although Project Okello is sponsoring half of my trip fees of $3,500, I am still responsible for raising $1,750 to help cover the costs of travel, accommodations, and my visa. I am writing to you for three reasons: first to ask for your support financially as I attempt to go on this trip. I need to have a total of $2,000 in by June 4th to allow our airline tickets to be purchased and the full amount is due July 16th. I am asking specifically for donations of $50 or $100 to reach my goal, but I welcome your support in any amount. Secondly , I am asking for your prayers of protection as I go to Uganda where the team and I will be encountering a new culture and perspectives very different from our own. Thirdly, I’d like to ask that you pray for the Ugandan Water Project itself and the communities they are reaching and providing clean water for.
I look forward to connecting with you and sharing all about my adventures in Africa after the trip! Thank you so much for your support.
