Roots

Founded in 2008, the Ugandan Water Project grew out of a friendship between James Harrington, Derek Levendusky, and George Nsamba. At the time of their meeting in 2007, James was working with Derek at Isaiah 6 Ministries when he met George, who was in the US for a pastors conference, at a neighbors barbecue. They talked about life in Uganda and the challenges people faced in the struggle of daily life. Together they envisioned what it would look like to use the platform of Isaiah 6 to help advocate for clean water in Ugandan communities. What began as a side project, soon grew beyond anyone’s expectations into a full-time endeavor for James, who split off from Isaiah 6, to found Ugandan Water Project, Inc., a 501(c)3 humanitarian non-profit organization in 2009.

Working alongside George and a growing Ugandan staff of office workers and installation crew members, the organization blossomed over the years from the first water project in 2008 to over 230 as of mid 2015. Since inception the organization has grown through the work of amazing volunteers, both in the US and on our 20+ short-term teams, an incredible staff in the US and Uganda, and the amazing generosity of our donors. This story is far bigger than any one of us and we’re so excited for what the coming chapters will bring!
