Clean Water Community Development in Uganda East Africa

Resource Development Process

The Ugandan Water Project develops small scale water resources in the Eastern African Country of Uganda. Please ask us a question about our process in the comments if these answers leave you wanting more:

1) How long does it take to install a rainwater collection tank?

Once the funds are deposited in our organization’s account, it only takes about thirty days to completely install a tank and have photographs emailed to our office. This is our target timeline but it can happen faster or a bit slower depending on several variables.

2) How big are the tanks?

Our typical system works with 10,000 liter tanks. This is equal to just over 2,600 gallons. The tanks are about 7ft tall and 5ft in diameter.

3) Is the rainwater treated once it is in the tank?

The rainwater is safe for drinking even untreated. Until recently, the challenge has been finding a treatment option that could be economically sustained within the limits of the typical Ugandan income of $1-$2 per day. We are now beginning to introduce simple electrolysis units that convert salt water to chloride and make water treatment affordable.

4) Is my gift tax deductible?

Yes! The Ugandan Water Project operates non-profit organization and all contributions are tax deductible.

5) Can I go with you to Uganda?

Yes, we send teams to Uganda several times a year. The purpose of the trips varies, but always include time spent in various communities documenting water tanks that were installed recently or pre-site visits to locations that need a tank funded. We are always interested in bringing donors to Uganda to meet the people that the donor helped. Contact our office to find out about upcoming opportunities to come with us to Uganda!

  1. Adrienne Nixon says:

What is the approximate cost of building and installing a water tank?

  2. Hey Adrienne,

Our most common rainwater collection system built around a 2,500 gallon storage tank will provide drinking water for about 100 families or 500 students. These tanks have a 30+ year lifespan and can be completely installed in about 30 days. The cost for this installation is only $3,500 USD and includes everything from the materials to local labor to deliver and install the tank and a community dedication celebration.

What’s really a blast, is sponsoring a water tank and then coming with us to meet the people you’ve helped face to face!

    So what do you think?
